"Fresh, surprising, and compulsively readable."—New York Times bestselling author Andrea Bartz
A psychic on the verge of stardom who isn’t sure she believes in herself and a cynical journalist with one last chance at redemption are brought together by secrets from the past that also threaten to tear them apart.

Psychic-medium Sylvie Young starts every show with her origin story, telling the audience how she discovered her abilities. But she leaves out a lot—the plane crash that killed her parents, an estranged adoptive family who tend orchards in rainy Oregon, panic attacks, and the fact that her agent insists she research some clients to ensure success.
After a catastrophic reporting error, Thomas Holmes’s next story at the L.A. Times may be his last, but he’s got a great personal pitch. “Grief vampires” like Sylvie who prey upon the loved ones of the deceased have bankrupted his mother. He’s dead set on using his last-chance article to expose Sylvie as a conniving fraud and resurrect his career.
When Sylvie and Thomas collide, a game of cat and mouse ensues, but the secrets they’re keeping from each other are nothing compared to the mysteries and lies they unearth about Sylvie’s past. Searching for the truth might destroy them both—but it’s the only way to find out what’s real.

Fischer (When Elephants Fly) delivers a pulsating story of an up-and-coming psychic edging toward superstardom, the journalist set on taking her down, and their unexpected romance. Sylvie Young has legitimate paranormal skills, even if her agent insists she check at least a few of her audience members’ social media profiles before each appearance to make sure she can please the crowd with her knowledge. But when Los Angeles Times reporter Thomas Holmes attends one of her performances after posting a fictitious story about losing his wife, Sylvie falls for the bait. Thomas’s crusade to debunk so-called “grief vampires” is personal, as his mother has squandered enormous sums of money over the years trying to contact her dead husband and son through psychics, though he doesn’t like to talk about it. He makes a deal with Sylvie: she will perform without “cheating,” and if it works, he won’t expose her past tricks. As Thomas and Sophie fall for each other, both are scared of what the other might reveal about their lives. Fischer has a natural touch for plotting and clever dialogue, and her fresh, delightful plot charms and entices. Women’s fiction readers will devour this.

Known for writing YA fiction like The Speed of Falling Objects, Fischer debuts her first adult contemporary romance/mystery novel with ease. Sylvie Young is a rising star who uses her psychic abilities to provide closure to her audiences. Journalist Thomas Holmes has one chance to produce the story that will change his writing career, and he has embarked on a personal vendetta to expose psychic mediums as frauds. His main target is Sylvie. What he doesn't realize is that Sylvie struggles with anxiety, has no memory of her life before her adoption at age six, and has deeply buried secrets. Together (as adversaries), they seek out the truth regarding her past, while Thomas hopes to expose Sylvie in the end. This story is about conquering personal faults and fears and accepting one's sincerest self to truly be happy. Narrators Sarah Naughton and Pete Cross smoothly depict their characters' feelings of guilt, anger, frustration, anxiety, admission, forgiveness, and ultimately, love. VERDICT Featuring an opposites attract romance filled with mystery and intrigue, this title will capture the audience of women's lit with its distinctive plot and exploration into the psychic realm.--Lacey Webster
