Title details for Lyrical Ballads by William Wordsworth - Available
One of the most important and influential collections of poetry ever published in English, Lyrical Ballads first appeared anonymously in 1798. As the preface declared, the poems were experiments in language, intended to change fundamentally concepts of what constitutes poetry, but they were also radical in their scrutiny of social organisation and of human relations and feelings: the poetic revolutionaries were also seeking to promote a social revolution. The experience that Wordsworth and Coleridge seek to represent and explore is social and political, dealing commonly with the poor, the oppressed, the marginalised. This new reader-printable edition is edited by Professor Angus Easson, who also contributes an introduction, poem-by-poem commentary and explanatory notes, biographical notes on the two poets, and a bibliography.
