After the entertainment of Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen challenged her readers with Mansfield Park, a complex and thought-provoking work in which the heroine’s path to marriage and the reader’s heart are equally tortuous. A poor relation brought up on the country estate of her wealthy uncle, the virtuous but passive Fanny Price is contrasted with Maria and Julia Bertram, her shallow cousins, and the worldly-wise Mary Crawford, a bewitching anti-heroine whose brother’s offer of a socially advantageous marriage Fanny rejects. The characters, often puzzling and contradictory, are drawn with depth and conviction, and in portraying selfishness and stupidity, hypocrisy and snobbery, Austen addresses such issues of the day as the education of women, the role of the clergy and the responsibilities of the landed gentry. The text of this reliable new edition is based on that of the first edition published in 1814; all editorial emendations are recorded in hyperlinked notes.
