Sail. Salvage. Repeat.
For as long as Toby can remember, he and his father have sailed on the Phoenix, salvaging from the junk-filled seas to stay afloat, while keeping under the radar of the authorities. His father is, after all, a wanted man.
And now the Phoenix is on the trail of the ultimate prize: a salvage of solar panels that could mean they'll never need to hunt for fuel again.
Ayla is second-in-command on the rival Banshee, where she's trained her whole life to fight—just as her mother, Captain Nell, demands. Since childhood, Ayla's been taught the Phoenix must be destroyed. With the ship in their sights, her crew is desperate to have the precious intel, too.
Toby's sick of a life at sea, and Ayla may be his only hope. Can he turn an old feud into a new alliance that will save both their skins?
Award-winning author Bryony Pearce brings the high seas to life with her rousing steampunk pirate adventure that will have you craving more.

A pirate ship plies the garbage-strewn and poisonous seas of a late 21st century finally recovering from the eruption of the Yellowstone supervolcano.Toby is the 14-year-old chief engineer of the Phoenix in a world with poisonous oceans, where the sun has emerged at last from the starving decades of the Darkness and where England has been long overthrown by the military dictatorship of St. George. Despite the backbreaking work of finding salvage in the deadly, acid waters, Toby's life isn't so bad: he loves his job; his best friend is an animatronic AI parrot; and he's just met someone his own age for the first time. Hiko is a scruffy young stowaway who earns a berth helping Toby rescue the Phoenix in a deadly storm. But the storm is just the beginning of bad luck for the (mostly lovable) pirate crew. They must escape the Phoenix's nemesis, the killers that crew pirate captain Nell's Banshee, while repairing their own ship in a possibly hostile port. Copious violence ensues (though remarkably little death), and Toby must seek an alliance with Capt. Nell's remarkably pretty and remarkably vicious 15-year-old daughter if the day's to be saved for the multiethnic and multinational crew (of the main characters, only half-Japanese, half-unspecified Hiko has an identifiable ethnicity). Although the resources and agriculture described are often inconsistent with the 40-year, tree-killing Darkness, mostly solid plotting and a deft setup for Volume 2 should keep many readers happy. Thrilling steamship adventure overcomes wobbly worldbuilding. (Science fiction. 12-14)

Gr 6 Up-In a dystopian world, natural resources are scarce, a supervolcano has blocked the sun for decades, and martial law rules. Toby serves as the chief engineer of his father's pirate ship, the Phoenix. Toby's father, Captain Barnaby Ford, is a brilliant inventor who has created the Phoenix as a way to escape the military, which wants to use his genius to develop weapons. Along with a crew of outlaws, Captain Ford and Toby search for salvage that can be used to keep the ship afloat, including solar panels that will provide power without the need for oil. When a dangerous storm brings about a confrontation with a rival ship, the Banshee, with its captain, Nell, and second-in-command, Ayla, Toby must use all of his skills to keep the Phoenix and her crew safe. Toby narrates this adventure on seas filled with junk, with ships made of salvaged materials. Fans of dystopian tales will appreciate Pearce's world-building and attention to detail in the mechanics of the new world. The opening fake newspaper clippings feel pulled from today's headlines, adding to the sense of realism and the possibility that the book's events could happen in the future. Questions about some of the characters' backstories and a mysterious island are left unanswered but may be addressed in future volumes. VERDICT An additional purchase where steampunk adventure titles are popular.-Ashley Leffel, Griffin Middle School, Frisco, TX

Grades 5-8 Before the oil crisis, before the supervolcano, before the riots and wars, the world was a beautiful place. Now, after the economic collapse, the seas are clogged with junk and wreckage, the living animals long gone. Toby, a pirate aboard the Phoenix, has salvaged for food and supplies with his father, a fugitive. Their struggle to stay aliveand afloatleads them to a cache of solar panels that could mean an easier future. When Toby is kidnapped by the crew of the rival scrapper ship Banshee, he tries to make friends with second-in-command Ayla, a gorgeous pirate and daughter of the fearsome Captain Nell, even as he tries to save both himself and his ship. His adventure is perilous, to be sure, but also riveting. Pearce's descriptive text sparks and shudders with details of the salvage ships, what they're made of, and how they manage to roam the crowded seas. Some readers may find this an all-too-plausible future, but that only adds to its postapocalyptic appeal.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2017, American Library Association.)
