The novels of New York Times best-selling author J.F. Freedman combine gritty realism with gripping suspense. Bird's-Eye View is a vivid thriller that will keep listeners enthralled from start to finish. Ex-collegiate professor turned loner, Fritz Tullis dropped out of academia for all the right reasons. He now spends his time thinking, drinking, fishing and photographing birds from a sweltering, screen-windowed shack at the edge of a swamp in southern Maryland. One morning, spying on birds with his telephoto lens, Fritz spots a plane landing on an airstrip across the bay. When he witnesses a deadly gunfight erupt outside the plane, Fritz, against his better judgement, is compelled to investigate further. Narrator Tom Stechschulte deftly navigates through Freedman's winding story as the stakes get higher and higher and Fritz's once quiet life is transformed into chaos.

Fritz Tullis has retreated to a ramshackled fishing cabin on Maryland family property to lick his emotional wounds when his life as a college professor falls apart after his affair with the dean's wife. Bird watching and photography, and drinking, are his main pursuits, and the first two cause him to witness and capture on film a murder. His involvement leads to danger, as well as changes in his life, as he tries to determine whom he can trust. Tom Stechschulte's narration reflects the weariness and apathy that have crept into Fritz's life; then the narration picks up speed and tension as Fritz learns about a high-level cover-up. Stechschulte inhabits all the characters, superbly conveying age, power, and gender. A gripping story makes for a satisfying thriller, beautifully read. M.A.M. Fritz Tullis, history professor and amateur photographer, has retreated to his family's estate in southern Maryland, where he watches birds and indulges in nature until the fateful day he witnesses a murder, which he captures on film. Gregory Harrison takes the listener through Tullis's investigation into the murder, which involves his own neighbor. Never losing the plot line, Harrison draws the characters closer and closer to the listener with his low voice and intense performance. As the adventure and danger heat up, so does Harrison's emotional narration. Music plays on and off throughout the story, enhancing the tension and the intrigue, and the startling conclusion leaves the listener rooting for the good guys. M.B.K.
