It must be the nightmare of police officers to be called to the scene of a murder, only to find the victim is a loved one. Neeley Jones is a newly elected sheriff confronting the Oregon version of a good old boys' network of racism and cross-burnings. Narrator Myra Lucretia Taylor keeps listeners wondering how much more this sheriff will be forced to endure. She provides a range of voices, in particular for the skinheads, who sound like they don't know enough to come in out of the rain. Unfortunately, volume differences make it difficult to hear many of the characters without being knocked over by others. This is likely more of a problem when listening in the car. J.E.M.
