A modern classic, Great Lion of God spent a remarkable eight months on the New York Times best-seller list. It is a grand biblical narrative from Taylor Caldwell, the award-winning author acclaimed for majestic historical tales like Dear and Glorious Physician and I, Judas. This is a sweeping novel of the life and times of Paul of Tarsus. A man with uniquely human qualities, Paul faced a world much like that of today, yet two millennia in the past. An extremely intelligent and passionate man, he spread Judeo-Christianity throughout the world. From his work arose the foundation for the morals and philosophy of contemporary Western thought. Many books have been written about St. Paul's accomplishments, but Caldwell's story is unique and compelling for its focus on Paul the human being, with all the strengths and weaknesses we see mirrored in ourselves. John McDonough's warm narration intensifies the richness of this epic.

Paul of Tarsus was not a likable man, becoming only marginally more so after his conversion on the road to Damascus. Despite his irascible personality, Paul was passionately devoted to his faith, both as a Jew and later as a committed Christian. John McDonough brings stunning clarity and realism to Caldwell's epic saga of early Christianity. His gruff voice becomes alternately enraged and engaging, convicting and compassionate, tortured and transfigured. Deep strength and volume in one passage give way to soft near-whispers in the next. Even through the long-winded portions of the text, McDonough carries the listener to a new and deeper understanding of both the history of faith, and the personalities of the people who have embraced it then and now. Versatile narrator Braden Wright lends his commanding voice to this novel on the life of the apostle St. Paul of Tarsus. The audiobook imagines the life of Paul from his birth as Saul through the transformation that made him a disciple of Christ and ends just before he is to travel to his death. Full of detailed imagery and specific information for the timeframe, the story inspires the imagination and leaves the listener wanting to find out more about Paul. This novel is lengthy, but Wright keeps listeners engaged with his powerful and often emotional delivery. V.B. © AudioFile 2020, Portland, Maine
