Glimpses of Truth: The Wycliffe Translation

Stretching from the English countryside to the streets of Rome, this is a story of adventure, drama, romance, and betrayal. The 1300s were a time of great illiteracy, and it was considered heresy to read, or even possess, Scriptures in the commoner's language. Young Thomas, a gifted assistant to John Wycliffe (real-life pioneer translator of the Bible into English), is threatened with the loss of his freedom, and possibly his life, when he fights to save the translation from destruction. Virginia Leishman's clear, relaxed voice comfortably portrays the range of characters, as well as an occasional verse in Latin. Her consistent narration achieves a complementary blend of reality and intrigue as Cavanaugh blends fact and fiction to depict a complex and revolutionary piece of church history. F.L.F.
