Gr 1-3-A bragging contest in EllRay Jakes's third grade class quickly morphs into a risky game of one-upmanship with EllRay caught in the center. Initially, he tries to persuade his family to buy an ATV, but in an effort to place himself on the class popularity map, EllRay impulsively decides to borrow his father's rock collection, unbeknownst to his dad. What begins as the best Tuesday EllRay had ever had ends in disaster when he starts giving away crystals in an effort to buy his peers' admiration. When his father discovers EllRay's deceit, the consequences fit the crime. Warner's use of humor in addressing issues of bullying and popularity will attract even reluctant readers.
