Dr. Watson's introduction to the Holmes case among the Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes called The Adventure of Silver Blaze (Strand magazine December 1892) is succinct and impossible to improve upon: "There was but one problem before the public which could challenge his powers of analysis, and that was the singular disappearance of the favourite for the Wessex Cup, and the tragic murder of its trainer."

David Ian Davies gives a fine performance of this Sherlock Holmes story, bringing to life the great detective and his colleague, Watson. Davies provides a suitably highbrow British persona when portraying the detective, and delivers equally fine performances for the other characters. The production, however, has some background noise and skips appear periodically throughout the recording, and the entire piece is burned as one track on the CD and it is impossible to bookmark one's place. That said, Conan Doyle's story is what any Sherlock Holmes fan would expect, and Davies does the sleuth great justice in the reading. H.L.S. (c) AudioFile 2003, Portland, Maine
