The City of Dreadful Night and Other Poems - British Heritage Database Reader-Printable Edition

ebook
The British poet James Thomson (1834–82) was one of literature’s great outsiders. His masterpiece, “The City of Dreadful Night”, can be seen both as a graphic representation of the alienations of mankind in a universe without God, and as the disillusioned, manic depressive vision of a man who had never found success commensurate with his remarkable talents. This British Heritage Database edition is based on the collection first published in 1880, two years before Thomson’s death, and represents not only the melancholy grandeur of Thomson’s anguished voice, but also the pessimist’s capacity for humour and imagination in such delightful poems as “Sunday at Hampstead”. It may be printed for personal use.
