The hit TV show, The Lands Beyond, has become a cultural phenomenon, influencing fashion and baby name trends. Its creator, R. R. Reynard, masterminds the story each season, pitting the cast against each other in a toxic, kill or be killed, environment. But Reynard has even greater ambitions. He's formed a feudalistic society of superfans who are willing to do anything to rise in the ranks and be officially canonized as a character on The Lands Beyond. With the show set to enter its final season, the cast, crew, and superfans attend a convention at the historic Chateau D'Loire. While holding court, Reynard is murdered, and the notebook holding all the secrets, twists, and endings disappears.

Enter Ken Allen, former D-list actor turned private eye. As the body count rises, Ken discovers the stakes are far greater than just a television show. And the fantasy neophyte is about to learn that all is fair in love and war in The Lands Beyond.

For readers who love fun mysteries like the Spenser series by Robert B. Parker, the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich, and the M Murder series by Anthony Horowitz.

Tim Campbell's rich baritone brings this comic mystery exactly what it needs to keep listeners engaged. A hit TV series, "The Lands Beyond," has had a profound influence on its fans--from their clothing choices to their babies' names. The author of the show, R.R. Reynard, maintains tight control over each script. Reynard goes to a fan-filled convention at the posh Chateau D'Loire. Almost immediately, he's murdered, and the show's scripts vanish. Who murdered him? Campbell's performance primarily takes a tongue-in-cheek tone and is filled with snide comments about fandom and fanaticism. His spot-on delivery exudes both humor and gravitas. With high-speed action, a witty mystery, original characters, and Campbell's expert narration, listeners won't want to miss this. S.J.H. © AudioFile 2023, Portland, Maine

Listeners are thrown immediately into the action with Crawford's latest Ken Allen book (after Heroes Ever Die). When Ken agrees to investigate several attempts on the life of famed television show creator R.R. Reynard, he doesn't foresee Reynard being murdered before the ink is dry on the contract. Stuck in a labyrinthine hotel with several hundred fanatical devotees of Reynard's sprawling fantasy epic, known for its surprise twists and grisly deaths, Ken will have to rely on his wits to avoid becoming the next target. Tim Campbell plays the hard-boiled detective role to the hilt with a controlled bass rumble that conjures the image of a fedora and trench coat, even when Ken is costumed as a knight. Campbell controls the pace of the narrative expertly, keeping listeners on the edge of their seats through complicated plot revelations and impressively choreographed fight sequences. His voices and accents for the secondary cast range from subtle to sublimely ridiculous in accordance with the character beats, with rarely a misplaced cue. VERDICT Highly recommended for listeners who want a madcap mixture of Stephanie Plum, Veronica Mars, and Magnum, P.I.--Natalie Marshall
