　　中国古代主要是把字写在或刻在竹片上，再编成册，那种用来写字的绢帛叫做纸。绢帛很贵而竹简又太笨重，并且不便于人们使用。蔡伦于是想出一种方法，用树皮、麻头以及破布、鱼网造成纸。元兴（汉和帝年号）元年上奏皇帝，皇帝夸赞他的才能，从此都采用他造的纸，所以天下都说"蔡侯纸"。
